The outline groups H3–H6 headings beneath the H2 before them. Readers can jump to a section, and the current section is highlighted as they scroll.

Choose a top-of-post, left-gutter, or right-gutter placement in Layout settings, or add the MD → Table of Contents widget. Gutter placement requires a Layout without a sidebar or page builder.

An Outline Built from Your Headings

The contents list follows the structure of the post, including nested sections.

A left-gutter Table of Contents on a Changelog post expands the H3 headings beneath their H2 section.

Table of Contents reads headings from H2 through H6. H3–H6 headings appear in collapsible sublists beneath the H2 that comes before them.

Click a link to scroll to its heading. The URL hash updates to match, so readers can share a link directly to a section. A link with a heading hash also scrolls to the heading when the page loads.

  • Nested H2–H6 outline
  • Current section highlighted while scrolling
  • Heading links update and follow the URL hash

Choose a Placement That Fits Your Layout

Add the list where it helps readers navigate your articles.

Place it above or beside the post

Choose Top of post, Left gutter, or Right gutter in the post type or single post’s Layout settings. Gutter placements require a Layout with no sidebar and no page builder. Otherwise, the list appears above the post.

The Table of Contents widget lists the major sections of the Share Drop-in article.

Keep a sticky outline in view

At the top of a post, sticky mode collapses the table into a bar that stays on screen and expands when clicked. On screens under 900px, it becomes an expandable bar fixed to the bottom of the screen.

The Table of Contents widget lists sections of the Bookshelf Drop-in article.

Use the sidebar widget

Add MD → Table of Contents to a widget area and set its title. The widget appears only on single posts and stays hidden when the Layout already adds a table of contents.

Save older posts once

The heading list is read when a post is saved. After installing Table of Contents, save posts written earlier so their heading lists are generated.
