The problem
Different Pages Need Different Layouts
A landing page doesn’t need your sidebar, and a long essay doesn’t need a busy header. Most themes make you pick one layout, then edit templates for every exception.
Without Md
- One layout on every page
- Template edits just to hide a sidebar
- A landing page that keeps your blog header
- Exceptions that disappear on the next update
With Layout Options
- Set layout by post type, category, or page
- Show or remove the header, sidebar, panel, and footer
- Blank settings inherit from the level above
- Builder mode for full-width block layouts
How it works
Three Steps to the Right Layout
Set a default for a post type, then change a category or a single page.

Set a default
Choose the layout for a whole post type, such as all Posts or all Pages.

Adjust a category
Override it for a category, and every post inside inherits the change.

Fine-tune one page
Open any page or post and change just that layout.
Header and footer
Show Only What the Page Needs
Remove the whole header, or just its logo, elements, or menu. Choose a different header menu for a page, or remove the footer or its columns.
- Remove the whole header or just part of it
- Choose a different header menu per page
- Remove the footer or its columns

Content
Control What Surrounds the Content
Add or remove the page title, author box, and post navigation, and switch the content box between Box, Border, and No style.
- Page title, author box, and post navigation
- Content style per page
- Featured image position per page

Builder
A Full-Width Canvas When You Need One
Enable Builder and a page’s blocks run edge to edge, which suits landing pages. The MD.com front page is built this way.
- Enable Builder per page, post type, or category
- Full-width block sections
- WP format on or off

Questions
Questions, Answered
The things people ask most about Layout Options. Still curious? Read the docs.
Can I turn off the sidebar on just one page?
Yes. Open the page, find its Layout settings, and remove the sidebar there. The same options work for a whole post type or category.
What happens when I change a post type’s layout?
Everything in that post type inherits the change, unless a category or a single page has its own setting. The most specific setting wins.
What is Builder?
Builder lets a page’s blocks run full width, which suits landing pages. You can turn it on for a page, a post type, or a category.
Does this work in the Classic editor?
Yes. Layout settings sit beside the editor in both the Block and Classic editors. See Block & Classic Editor.
