The problem
Bylines Are Usually Hard-Coded
The author, date, and comment count appear in whatever order the theme author chose, in the same place on every page. Changing it means editing a template.
Without Md
- Author and date order fixed by the theme
- Template edits to add or move an item
- The same byline on every kind of page
- No way to add your own item
With Byline Builder
- Drag items into the order you want
- Different bylines for archives, posts, and categories
- Items added by Drop-ins, like Share
- Labels, avatars, and details you can show or hide
How it works
Three Steps to Your Byline
Pick your items, put them in order, then choose where they show.

Pick your items
Choose from Author, Date, Comments, Category, Badge, and Edit.

Order and place them
Drag items into order and pick a position for the byline.

Set it per view
Use different bylines on archives, single posts, and categories.
Items
Six Built-In Items
Show the author with an avatar or first name, the date or a relative time, comments, categories as tags, a New badge, and an edit link for you.
- Author with avatar or first name
- Date, or a relative time like “2 weeks ago”
- Comments, category tags, badge, and edit link

Placement
Put It Anywhere Around the Title
Place the byline at the top of the entry, before or after the title, before the content, or in the entry footer.
- Top of the entry
- Before or after the title
- Before the content or in the footer

Per view
A Byline for Every View
Give archives, single posts, category entries, and the author loop their own bylines. Override a taxonomy’s archive byline when a category needs something different.
- Archives, Single, and Category Entry
- The Author Loop byline
- Taxonomy-level overrides

Drop-ins
Add Items From Drop-ins
Drop-ins can add their own byline items. The Share Drop-in places its buttons right in the byline builder.
- Items registered by Drop-ins
- Share and like buttons, placed where you want them
- Extend it with your own through a filter

Questions
Questions, Answered
The things people ask most about Byline Builder. Still curious? Read the docs.
Can I add my own byline item?
Developers can register items with a filter, and Drop-ins add their own. The Share Drop-in places its buttons this way.
Can archives and single posts have different bylines?
Yes. Archives, single posts, category entries, and the author loop each have their own byline.
Can I show “2 weeks ago” instead of a date?
Yes. The date item has a relative option that shows how long ago a post was published.
What is the Badge item?
It shows a label, “New!” by default, on recent posts. You choose the label and how many days a post counts as new. The default is seven.
